43rd Anniversary of M*A*S*H

Has it really been a year since we last celebrated the anniversary of M*A*S*H premiering on CBS back in September 1972? Well, it has. Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the very first episode airing on television. If you haven’t watched “M*A*S*H — The Pilot” in a while today would be a good time to check it out again. I reviewed the pilot episode as part of my Episode Spotlight feature back in December 2014.

You can find critical reviews of “M*A*S*H — The Pilot” here. Writing for The New York Times, John J. O’Connor ended his review with the following: “‘M*A*S*H’ could be a major innovation for television. Or it could slip quietly into the category of ‘Hogan’s Heroes.'” Fortunately for all of us, the series turned out to be the major innovation O’Connor hoped it could be.

If you’re interested you can also watch the original CBS fall preview for M*A*S*H, consisting entirely of footage from the pilot, and while you’re at it, you can also check out some early promotional images and press releases for the series.

  1. It has also been 13 years since the 30th Anniversary Reunion. Even though we’ve lost a few of the cast since then (Larry Gelbart, Harry Morgan and Allan Arbus), they really should get together and do another one.
