Last month’s poll was the first suggested by someone at the M*A*S*H4077TV.com Forums (suggest your own here). It asked visitors “Which Season One character would you have liked to see more of?” and I have to say I was completely surprised by the results, which were pretty close. Ugly John topped the poll with 24% of the vote, followed by Dish with 22% and Spearchucker Jones a close third with 21%.

Preview January’s Poll:
This month’s poll asks “Which character do you wish had stayed on M*A*S*H?” and the options are Colonel Blake, Trapper, Frank or Radar.
If I knew Barbara Bannerman was going to be dead last in the poll results, I would’ve given her a sympathy vote, simply because she was a hotsy-totsy.
But in all seriousness, I voted for Ugly John, because of all those Season One characters that were dropped, he really served a real purpose at the 4077th at being a gas passer… notice afterwards, the surgeons and nurses basically took turns with the anesthesia, even B.J. wrote about that to Peggy when he had to be the anesthesiologist for Frank’s patient. Not only that, but he offered a nice little bit of cultural diversity (John Orchard was British, but I believe Ugly John was Australian).
I voted for Ugly John as well, for much the same reasons as stated by Big Daddy. Having a medical unit without an anesthesia specialist seemed a little odd to me. Plus I liked the ‘diversity’ that Ugly John would have added to the cast. It would have been nice to see his character fleshed out. What was his background? Married or single? How did he ended stationed with an American unit?
I think he was married… I think I’ve seen a ring on his finger before, and I know in one episode he mentions a misus.
I voted for Kaplan the Dentist personally. I thought his character had the most room for development on the series. Ugly John would’ve been my second choice for a permanent stay. Plus, Kaplan I thought was quite amusing. At least Kaplan got an official farewell episode unlike the rest of the Season One cast(the episode was Showtime).
