Robert Symonds, who appeared in two episodes of M*A*S*H as Colonel Horace Baldwin, died Thursday at age 80 according to Variety.com. Colonel Baldwin was the man responsible for sending Charles Emerson Winchester, III (David Ogden Stiers) to the 4077th. He first appeared in the Season Six episode Fade Out, Fade In and returned in the Season Nine episode No Laughing Matter. The article lists dozens of theater productions Symonds was involved with, in addition to his numerous television and film roles.
I also recall Robert Symonds from the premiere episode of The Love Boat, where he played the new husband of Capt. Steubing’s ex-wife, Stacey, played by Bonnie Franklin. After Capt. Steubing told her to go to her room for her general obnoxiousness through the whole cruise, he backed up Steubing quietly but firmly, “Stacey, go to your room”.
I enjoyed him a colonel Baldwin on Mash may he rest in Peace
