Recently there’s been an increase in comment spam here MASH4077TV.com and unfortunately there is very little I can do to stop it. Options for combating comment spam are limited. One option is to turn off comments entirely, which I don’t want to do. Another option is to manually approve every single comment, which I don’t have time to do.
The third option is to use a spam fighting service that stops the vast majority of spam comments and manually delete the few that slip through. That’s what I’ve been doing for many years. The spam fighting service Akismet has stopped over 15,000 spam comments since 2016 with an accuracy rate of 99%.
Comment spam comes in two varieties. The first and most familiar are irrelevant and sometimes incomprehensible comments with links to scam websites. This is the type of spam Akismet is very good at catching.
The other kind of comment spam are weird comments left by presumably real people who for whatever reason enjoy leaving many comments. This type of spam I generally have to delete manually.
I do my best to manage comment spam but occasionally comments slip through. I apologize for any spam comments that are posted that anyone finds offensive or upsetting. Please e-mail me if you notice any spam comments.
For the record, I’ve been dealing with a massive increase in e-mail spam over the past three or four months. This only makes it more difficult to fight comment spam because I may not immediately see an e-mail alerting me about spam comments. I am working on the issue but, like comment spam, it isn’t easy to fight e-mail spam.
