Scriptwriter Charlie Hauck, who wrote a single episode of M*A*S*H under the pseudonym Richard Cogan, died November 14th at the age of 79. He started out in television in the mid-1970s and spent more than thirty years writing for TV shows like Maude, Apple Pie, The Associates, Valerie, Home Improvement, and Frasier.
Hauck wrote the Season 5 episode “Mulcahy’s War” but was credited as Richard Cogan. According to obituaries published by Deadline Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter, he wrote the episode “as a favor to Larry Gelbart.”
I haven’t been able to find any additional information about why Hauck used a pseudonym.
Ken Levine posted a tribute to Hauck at his blog yesterday.
