Dear Sis Voted the Best Father Mulcahy Episode

More than 230 votes were cast in last month’s poll, which asked visitors to pick the best Father Mulcahy episode. I put together a list of 10 episodes I feel are among Father Mulcahy’s best and “Dear Sis” was the winner with 31% of the vote. It came in a few percentage points ahead of “Mulcahy’s War” which had 26% of the vote. Rounding out the Top 3 was “Blood Brothers” with 13% of the vote.

Here are the full results:

Best Father Mulcahy Episode

Dear Sis (31%, 74 Votes)
Mulcahy’s War (26%, 61 Votes)
Blood Brothers (13%, 30 Votes)
The Interview (6%, 14 Votes)
Run for the Money (6%, 13 Votes)
A Holy Mess (6%, 13 Votes)
Nurse Doctor (3%, 8 Votes)
Captains Outrageous (3%, 6 Votes)
Out of Gas (3%, 6 Votes)
An Eye for a Tooth (2%, 5 Votes)
Other (2%, 5 Votes)

Total Votes: 235

Personally, I had a tough time with this poll. There are a lot of great Father Mulcahy moments–none perhaps as great as his famous scene from “The Interview” but I don’t consider “The Interview” to be an overall great Father Mulcahy episode. I ultimately voted for “Dear Sis,” along with so many others.

Which episode did you vote for and why? I’m especially interested in hearing from the five people who voted Other.

This month’s poll kick’s off the Great 2017 M*A*S*H Episode Poll, which I’ll explain more about tomorrow.

  1. I think Hawkeye sums up Mulcahy best in his toast during the tag of “Dear Sis,” by saying that he’s, “Too modest and too utterly simple a man to know how much strength he gives us just by the decency of his life among us.”

For me, “Dear Sis” shows Mulcahy at his truest form: just wanting to be of help and comfort to those who need him, but feeling that nobody needs him, and that when he does try to make a difference, he just makes a mess of things. It certainly seems in better character than the episode just before this where he broods over not receiving the promotion he feels he deserves for all he’s done in camp.

“Mulcahy’s War” would have probably been my second choice, given that Mulcahy felt he would have been of better use at a front-like unit where people would probably really more in need of spiritual comfort, and how he even saved a man’s life while under fire – given instructions over the radio.

  2. I voted for ‘Nurse Doctor’ simply because it showed the dear Father dealing with an issue he never was supposed to be dealing with. Very funny.

Col Potter (to Hawkeye): You stop talking about her.
(to Margaret): You stop hating her.
(to Fr. Mulcahy): And you stop dating her.

  3. I voted for “Dear Sis” as well. It really delved internally into his character and how he feels about his worth within the unit. Plus, having it being one of the “Christmas episodes”, that kinda helped, too. And Hawkeye’s line that BDOR quoted above is spot-on.

Nurse Doctor and Mulcahy’s War were close seconds for me, especially Col. Potter’s lines that Seoul City Sue mentioned – my family and I still get a good chuckle out of that scene…..Not to mention the “She hugged the stuffing outta me!!” from Father Mulcahy. 🙂

  4. I missed out on the voting, but it would have been either “Dear Sis” or “Nurse Doctor”.

  5. Dear Sis a beautiful episode. But, Nurse Doctor will always be my personal favorite Mulcahy episode. That chick hugged the stuffing out of him. LOL!

As a female Mulcahy fan. I…um…can’t say I blame her. Ha!

  6. Too late for the poll, but my vote would be “Nurse Doctor”, and to agree with all the other female Father Mulcahy fans who replied, if I was Gail Harris, I would’ve hugged the stuffing out of him, too! (Insert heart-eye emojis that my mother’s phone won’t send…)
