Episode List (Production Order)

The following is a list of all 256 episodes of M*A*S*H in the order they were produced. Most sources state there are only 251 episodes of M*A*S*H but counting the five hour-long episodes–“Welcome to Korea” (Season 4), “Bug Out” (Season 5), “Fade Out, Fade In” (Season 6), “Our Finest Hour” (Season 7), and “That’s Show Biz” (Season 10)–as two half-hour episodes brings the total to 256. 20th Century Fox, the company that produced M*A*S*H, gave each hour-long episode two separate production numbers. I’ve used these production numbers to put together this list.

CBS did not air episodes in the order they were produced. Because there was little continuity between episodes this rarely caused problems. Beginning with Season 9, CBS decided to hold episodes to use the following season. Four episodes produced for Season 9 were broadcast Season 10. Six episodes produced for Season 10 were broadcast during Season 11.

The episode number (i.e. 1×01) indicates when each episode aired on CBS. Compare these to the production codes to see how out of order certain episodes aired. For example, “M*A*S*H — The Pilot” (1×01) was the first episode aired during Season 1. “Henry, Please Come Home” (1×09) was the second episode produced but the ninth episode aired.

Perhaps the biggest discrepancy came in Season 5. “The General’s Practitioner” (5×20) was the seventh episode produced but aired 20th. “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen” (11×16) was the final episode aired but was actually the fourth episode produced for Season 11.

You can find a list of episodes in broadcast order here.

Thanks for providing this list. As long as I’ve been watching tv shows, only in the last year or so have I noticed those few, including MASH, show production numbers at the end. I’ve also noticed this custom with THE BOB NEWHART SHOW, MARY TYLER MOORE, HOGAN’S HEROES, and GILLIGAN’S ISLAND. You may have listed 2 of these out of order, as you show “Last Laugh” (Y104) before “Fallen Idol” (Y103). I think David Reiss’ book about MASH, of which I bought the 1st edition after Season 8, lists the episodes in production order and does not include original air dates.

Is there any way to know a full set of actual production dates? It seemed to me that at times, like Season 3, the entire season may have been filmed before the end of the season’s earlier calendar year, since the 2nd-to-last episode produced that season (“Bulletin Board”) aired on Jan. 14, 1975. I know from MASH scripts that I’ve purchased though that some episodes, like “Rally Round the Flagg Boys” and “April Fools”, were produced in January or possibly later, since their script dates were in January. I know that the finale was not the last episode produced, since it was well-documented that “As Time Goes By” was (and it was produced the 2nd week of Jan. 1983), but I was surprised to see that a full 6 episodes were produced after the finale.
