Alan Alda Reveals He Has Parkinson’s Disease

Alan Alda announced today during an interview with CBS This Morning that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease three-and-a-half years ago. I generally don’t post news relating to lives of the M*A*S*H cast but decided to make an exception for this. Alda clearly feels strongly about spreading a positive message with the public.

“But I think because I’m sort of well-known,” he said during his CBS This Morning interview, “it might be helpful to people to hear the message that there are things you can do. You can learn about things and not follow quackery, but find out what real science is coming up with.”

You can watch the interview below:

Alda also sent the following tweets about his revelation:

Media outlets like CNN, Variety, and The New York Times are covering the story.

  1. While it’s sad to hear, I’m happy to see that Alan is still living life to the fullest and not letting the disease hold him back . . . sadly, Bob Hoskins chose to retire from acting altogether when he was diagnosed with it, which was a shame, because I really liked him.

  2. I saw this news earlier today on my cell pjone that I’ve set to alert me when any M*A*S*H*-related news comes up, and I was quite shocked.
My grandmother had Parkinson’s, and my grandfather died from it before I was even born, so I have see first-hand the affect Parkinson’s has on the patients and caregivers.
Mr. Alda, I don’t know if you are a Christian or not, but I just wanted to let you know that God says that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13), that all things will work out for the good of those who love God (Romans 8:28), that God will supply all your needs according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus
( Philippians 4:19), and that you are God’s masterpiece and poem ( Ephesians 2:10).
I think you are very brave for speaking out and sharing your story. Perhaps soon, God will let a cure for this disease to be found, so none of us have to have this ever again.
I just wanted you to know that you have a eighteen-year-old M*A*S*H*-acholic praying for you. God bless you and your family!

  3. This is a very sobering announcement but also uplifting. Keep living life to the fullest and know that every M*A*S*H fan is praying for you.

  4. Edward Winter’s death in 2001 was attributed to Parkinson’s Disease, and he was a bit younger than Alan Alda.

  5. it’s sad! because i don’t wanted him died! death! i’m happy because is still alive from now on! i don’t know what’s happening to him in the future! but i don’t wanted to know! mash like other tv series are remaining of course in our hearts and souls! never forget these series!

  6. My grandma has Parkinson’s disease, she is about 75 years old it was detected 7 years ago. Right now it’s getting more difficult to live for her, because of stiff muscles she can’t even move. L-dopa and carbidopa medicines are given, but won”t give much relief. She can”t eat food and the skin is damaging forming ganglia. I thought this might be the last stage and the medications she was given did not help at all, so I started to do alot of research on natural treatments and came across Parkinson’s Herbal Treatment from Health Natural Centre ( healthnaturalcentre .org ), the treatment has made a very huge difference for her. Her symptoms including body weakness and her tremors disappeared after few months on the treatment. She is getting active again since starting this treatment, she is able to walk again ( down the street and back ) and able to ride her treadmill again. God Bless all PD Caregivers. Stay Strong, take small moments throughout the day to thank yourself, to love your self, and pray to whatever faith, star, spiritual force you believe in and ask for strength. I can personally vouch for these remedy but you would probably need to decide what works best for you.
