I actually forgot to vote last month. I’m not sure which episode I would have picked but I probably would have either voted for “Point of View,” “The Billfold Syndrome,” or “Rally Round the Flagg, Boys.”

  1. I voted for ‘Point of View’ which I thought was a very innovative episode. I’m not sure if any other shows from that time worked with the concept but it was very done on M*A*S*H. I know Charles Dubin spoke about directing the episode on one of the documentaries but it would have been really cool to see some pictures of the filming process.

  2. Like Season 4, I couldn’t vote this season because there were just too many good episodes vying for my vote that I couldn’t decide on. If I did have to vote for one, maybe it would be “Our Finest Hour” if only because it’s the clip show and it kind of serves as a reminder of why we fell in love with the show and its characters. But really: “Lil,” “None Like it Hot,” “They Call the Wind Korea,” “Baby, it’s Cold Outside,” “Point of View,” “Out of Gas,” “Dear Sis,” “The Price,” “The Young and the Restless,” “Hot Lips is Back in Town,” “Rally ‘Round the Flagg, Boys,” and “The Party” are all episodes I really enjoy.

That said, this is another poll where I don’t necessarily agree with the results. I really don’t see why “The Billfold Syndrome” was voted number one: it’s good, but not the best from the season. I also don’t understand why “Out of Gas” got no votes whatsoever, it’s a good one: Mulcahy gets to be the hero again while Charles complicates things for him with his arrogance. “A Night at Rosie’s” being voted so high seems odd too, likewise the positions of “Inga” and “Dear Comrade” feel a little too undeservingly generous too. “Our Finest Hour,” “An Eye for a Tooth,” “The Price,” and “Lil” don’t need to be at the bottom of the list (but “Major Ego” does).

  3. I agree – I’m not sure why The Billfold Syndrome received that many votes. It’s an okay episode, especially with Sydney in it (my favorite non-regular character), but not one I look forward to watching. And there were some I tend to skip over, Lil being one of them.

I voted for Dear Sis since it gave the viewer insight on the personal thoughts and feelings of Father Mulcahey. Plus, I loved the combination of his last line of the episode and the “pausing” still shot of the episode as they were all leaving the tent to go outside in the snow. And it was Christmas time (my favorite time of the year).

Season 8 may be difficult to decide which one is my favorite…. But, I’m really interested in seeing how many votes Dreams will get….if any….?

    1. I hate “Dreams”. I was really young when the episode first aired, and it gave me some horrible, horrible nightmares. While I have seen every episode of the show dozens of times, I think I have seen “Dreams” TWICE. It’s a brilliant episode, but I can’t get past the effect it had on me as a kid.

      1. I agree. That certainly is a brilliant episode, but one that isn’t too good for kids. I tend to skip that one when mine are around, even though they are 11, 14 and 18 years old. They or my wife don’t like it either. I think the first time I watched it was on TV (long before the DVDs were released) in the middle of the episode. I remembered thinking something like “what in the world is happening?? This is really bizarre!”, turned it off and didn’t watch it again for years. It took me a loooong time to be able to watch it…and now don’t mind it too much, especially with now being able to understand its intent….But, if I want to be entertained, I definitely skip it.

  4. I went with “A Night At Rosie’s”. I know it’s a love-it or hate-it episode, but I just love the fact that it all takes place in one location. No real rationale as to why I love it. I just do.

  5. I also don’t quite understand why “C*A*V*E” was voted so high, but it’s interesting to note that was the episode that inspired the creation of the beloved children’s literature and animation icon, Franklin.

Apparently the author of the original FRANKLIN books was nursing her baby one evening while watching this episode and found inspiration in Hawkeye’s note about not wanting to be reincarnated as a turtle, “Can you imagine me as a turtle? Afraid of my own shell?” Franklin’s name in some countries is Benjamin, so not only was the character inspired by Hawkeye, he was also named after Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce.
