  • Beeson Carroll’s Uncredited Cameo in “None Like It Hot”?

Earlier today, Lizard sent me the following e-mail:

In season 7, episode 6, I swear I see Beeson Carroll (Donald Penobscot) make an uncredited appearance in the scene where there is a line waiting to use the tub. He appears early in the scene, approaching the line and then disappearing into it. Is this correct, or do I have the wrong actor?

Donald Penobscot, Margaret’s husband, only made two appearances in M*A*S*H. Beeson Carroll originated the role in “Margaret’s Marriage” but was replaced by football player Mike Henry in “The M*A*S*H Olympics.” The character was mentioned numerous times before and after these episodes, however.

Beeson Carroll is not credited in “None Like It Hot” but that doesn’t necessarily mean he wasn’t in it. Many actors and actresses appeared uncredited throughout M*A*S*H. But why would Carroll make a cameo appearance more than a year-and-a-half after his one and only guest role in the series? Was he even available at the time? I suppose he could have been visiting or working on a project near the M*A*S*H set and decided to drop by.

Let’s look at the evidence. Here’s Carroll as Penobscot in “Margaret’s Marriage“:

    Margaret's Marriage
    “Margaret’s Marriage”

And here’s the scene in question from “None Like It Hot,” in which a tall, robed man tries to cut into the line only to be shoved out of the way:

    The M*A*S*H Olympics
    “The M*A*S*H Olympics”

The hair and basic structure of the face do look similar. And the man in the robe appears to be about a foot taller than Loretta Swit, which matches with the above image from “Margaret’s Marriage” in which Penobscot towers over Margaret. But unless Beeson Carroll or someone who was present when this episode was filmed can confirm that he made a tiny cameo appearance, this is going to stay a mystery.

Maybe he was in the area, and thought it would be an “easter egg” to just pop in for a moment!

Could it be Mike Henry (same scenario?)

The profile even looks like Beeson Carroll.

    2. PinkPagoda says:

In 1978, when this episode aired, Beeson Carroll appeared in “One Day at at Time” and “Barnaby Jones” – both of which filmed in L.A. , and a movie entitled “Coming Home” which filmed in Manhattan Beach, California.

The rest of that year he seemed to be filming in New York, so maybe he found himself in the vicinity, and thought it would be good for a hoot!

    3. PinkPagoda says:

Mike Henry was also filming in Los Angeles in 1978 – when he did an episode of “Lou Grant”.

No response to this, but does anyone know the answer to this…..

In season 9 Cementing Relationships…. When Hawk questions Klinger about his magic elixir for cement…..Klinger says, “I never said 6 parts gravel IN MY LIFE, IN MY LIFE,” Klinger says “IN MY LIFE” twice……Is this an editing mistake……???

    5. RJ says:

I think Klinger was just being emphatic by repeating himself.

I watched this episode (None like it Hot) on Me TV last night (they do not cut scenes) and the person that looks like Beeson Carroll in this picture, is in line at another time – and while he is the same height and with the same hairline – it is not the same guy. It also is not Mike Henry. It is just a tall guy with that 70s hairstyle in a burgundy robe.
