Things That I've Noticed In MASH

Talk about all things M*A*S*H -- the novel, the film, the television series, even the play. Not to mention the spin-offs, merchandise, cast, crew and anything else you can think of to talk about.

Things That I've Noticed In MASH

Post by Doug »

I'm new on this board, but I've noticed a few things in MASH--

1.) Early on, I think just in the first season, whenever a General showed up, the music was a fanfare based on the theme. Reminds of the various themes they had on Hogan's Heroes when Burkhalter, Hochstetter, or a visiting bigwig showed up at Stalag 13.

2.) Why did the showrunners bring on characters from the novel/film (Spearchucker, Ugly John, Dish, and Knocko), plus a couple of new ones (Ginger Baker, Margie Cutler) in the first season, then remove them?

3.) Same with Leslie Scorch (Henry's more-or-less steady girlfriend), and was she in the movie?

4,) Did anyone notice that Charles' name is a reference to Boston--Charles (River) Emerson (a college) Winchester (a suburb)?

Okay, discuss.

In regards to #2 and #3, it was felt that one of the problems with the first season was there were far too many minor characters to write for, which is why they dropped all of them, except for Klinger since he was such a hit, and Father Mulcahy since he proved to be a vital part of the cast.

They had so many "Dear..." episodes that I wished they had done a "Dear Trapper" one.
My great-grandfather, Tombstone Pierce, made his fortune selling whiskey and hors d'oeuvres to the Indians.
Whiskey and hors d'oeuvres, Gracie?

Yep, Trapper was hardly mentioned after season 3, I'm guessing the whole "Trapper John M.D." flap had a lot to do with it...

Things I notice lately have to do with the layout of the camp/hospital....Pre-op/supply room look virtually identical, the exterior doors entering pre-op/OR are different depending on whether the scene was shot outdoors or on a soundstage..also where exactly was the kitchen?

Damn I watch too much of this show..

As far as Spearchucker, the show creators claimed that they got rid of him because it turned out there were no black surgeons Korea. That turned out not to be true but that's what they said.

I don't remember Leslie Scorch from the MASH movie as Henry was more or less just fishing and acting confused in the movie. The action was on Hawk, Trapp, and Duke Forrest.

As for the layout of the camp, there are a few different diagrams on this very site that show where everything is. I'm not sure where but if you do a search you should find them.

The closest thing we ever came to that was one scene in one episode from Season 3 (I forget which episode) where Trapper writes to one of his daughters for her birthday, describing how he lives in a tent that's old and smelly, with two other doctors who are young and smelly.

I meant an episode where someone (Hawkeye) writes to Trapper after he gets home. “Let me update you on everything going on now.”

The creators didnt want the audience to focus on Trapper after he quit the show preferring instead that they learn more about and get to know BJ instead.

Except Trapper wouldn’t be the focus just like Hawk’s dad, Potter’s wife, Radar’s mom, and Mulcahy’s sister aren’t the focus in those episodes.
