Talk about all things M*A*S*H -- the novel, the film, the television series, even the play. Not to mention the spin-offs, merchandise, cast, crew and anything else you can think of to talk about.

Favorite Episode(s)

Post by Big Daddy O'Reilly »

To help get the party at the new forum here going underway, what is your favorite episode, or episodes?

I think if you guys can't tell by my username that you don't know my favorite, lol.

To me, it reminds me of when I was a school DJ in Grade 8... and like with Radar, nobody really liked the music I would play during my period as DJ (my middle school was in the ghetto where the kids wanted to hear hardcore rap and hip-hop, while I was playing good music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s), but unlike "Big Daddy O'Reilly", "DJ Salvatore" became somewhat popular throughout school... or at least, I couldn't walk down a hallway for a while without someone calling out, "Hey Salvatore!"

And while we didn't have a teacher or authority figure continuously request the same song over and over again, among the students there was a song that we wore out to the point our teacher banned us from playing it again (the song being "Cotton-Eyed Joe").

BIg Daddy, it's really nice that your favourite episode has a great meaning for you. I don't have an outright fave but here are three I can watch over and over

Tuttle - I'll admit it's silly and it doesn't make a lot of sense but it's also pretty inventive and clever and more importantly it's veryfunny. I think it shows the dynamic of the group pretty well and we get to see Sparky. I think it's the best of the sitcomy episodes

Deal Me Out - I don't anything about poker but it doesn't matter. This episode flows really well, there are some great lines and the occasional characters, such as Sydney and Pak, are used very well.(I'm a big Sydney fan). The camaraderie between all those at the poker table feels so real it's easy to forget the characters aren't real. I like the way the father/son dynamic of Henry and Radar's characters is explored. I also think the more serious side of war, with Private Carter is explored quite well and the right balance is struck.

Dear Sigmund - Another Sydney episode. I like the way the characters are almost reintroduced to us, it's a good episode to show people who aren't that familiar with the series as the episode mixes some real laugh out loud moments (Potter and the binocs) with some very touching scenes such as Potter reading Radar's letter to the deceased ambulance drivers parents without being too "In your face" about it.

Man, I could be here all day...but some of my favorites off the top of my head are -

"Deal Me Out", "A Smattering of Intelligence", "The Late Captain Pierce", "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?", "Movie Tonight", "Dear Sis", "Dreams" ...and my favorite episode ever is "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", even though this episode closes the book on the show, and I was hesitant to watch it for a while, it was done so wonderful and classy. It could have been cheesy and uninspired, but you could tell everyones heart was in it and I loved seeing how far all these wonderful characters have come over the course of the show.

I just wished Henry, Trapper and Radar could have been there for that one, but I do love the nod they gave Henry and Radar in "As Time Goes By".

Well, all of the episodes are special in their own way. That's why MASH is so good. But right now, maybe it's because the period and going through, my favorite episode is "The More I See You".

It's a hardw question, because i'm likely to be here all day listing pretty much every episode.. But here goes:
My top favourites would probably be
-'The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan' -- Flagg is hilarious, and this whole episode is full of great lines
- 'Dear Sigmund' -- I love Sydney, and i love the practical jokes in this episode
- 'The Yalu Brick Road' -- Don't really know why, but it's just funny and for some reason i can watch it over and over again and still smile..
- 'The joker is wild' -- I. Love. Practical. Jokes. :D
- Andd i could go on, but i think i'll stop here..
Oh no wait, and GFA, how could i forget the final episode :o

As you guys have said, there's so many great episodes it's hard to pick one, so I'm gonna try and pick my favourite from each season. This is the sort of list that will probably change.
1- Tuttle. I think it's a fun episode and I like how everyone starts to remember Tuttle.
2- Dr Pierce & Mr Hyde- Well I always like a good Hawkeye episode. I love the mix of his sleep deprived craziness and the sadder moments where he starts singing 'I'll be home for Christmas'.
3- Aid Station. Nice having three characaters who don't really interact that much off at the Aid station and working well together. And seeing how much worse it could be/
4- The Interview. Just such a great episode.
5- The Nurses. I think it's a nice change to focus on the nurses more and I love the storyline with Margaret. You feel she's the bad all along until the very end when she breaks your heart a little.
6- The smell of Music. What can I say, I like the petty rivalry between Hawkeye & BJ against Charles.
7- I'll get back to you on this one
8- Period of Adjustment. I quite like how Radar's leaving affects Klinger & BJ.
9- Oh, how we danced. Not usually a big fan of the BJ stories but I like how they help him celebrate his anniversary.
10- Sons & Bowlers. I don't like the bowling side so much but I LOVE the scenes with Charles & Hawkeye.
11- The Joker is Wild- It's a great idea and so well pulled off.

Goodbye, Farewell & Amen is in a league of it's own. I really love the episode.

Hi! I'm Ampersand, and I'm a HUGE fan of M*A*S*H. I own every season on DVD.

Favorite Episodes:
1. Dreams - A severely underrated episode. M*A*S*H is one of the only television shows I know that depicts dreams realistically.
2. Tuttle - Hawkeye being able to fool the entire camp into believing there actually was a Capt. Jonathan S. Tuttle is legendary!
3. Bottle Fatigue - An episode that isn't afraid to show the less-savory aspects of Hawkeye's character.
4. Bless You, Hawkeye - Good psychology in this episode.

I'm a big M*A*S*H fan and for me the show is in itself my favorite episode(s). That being said I do have some favorites. Here's a few.

Tuttle is my all time favorite so I put it in the number 1 position. It explains my username. The rest of the list is somewhat in order but not exact.

1. Tuttle - If I could only ever watch one episode of M*A*S*H this is the episode for me. Everyone loved and adored Tuttle. It just goes to show what the power of suggestion can do.

2. To Market, To Market - Henry's aloofness makes this one a winner. Watching his desk fly over is hilarious.

3. Big Mac - MacArthur saluting Klinger dressed as the Statue of Liberty is one of my favorite M*A*S*H moments.

4. The Trial Of Henry Blake - "A big red bird with fuzzy pink feet" - Another great Klinger scene.

5. Welcome To Korea - This has to be the best introduction of a new character ever on TV. BJ goes through so much with Hawkeye that by the next episode you truly believe they are good friends. The Corporal Captain scene is too funny.

6. Private Charles Lamb - Very funny, especially the Spam lamb.

7. A Smattering Of Intelligence - One of Flagg's best episodes.

8. Peace On Us - Everyone dying their hair and clothes red was a nice touch.

9. Life Time - I liked the real time element of this episode.

10. The Novocaine Mutiny - Frank Burns recollection of the events was so fitting. He tells it as if he is the greatest doctor who cares for everyone.

In the list above I tried to list some of my favorite regular episodes so I didn't mention Goodbye, Farewell and Amen. However this final episode is one of the best and one of my favorites.

GREAT THREAD

This is a fascinating read... so interesting to see what episodes ppl really like, many I love, some I'm absolutely miffed by... I want to critique this a bit but b4 I do, better put my money where my mouth is.

1 favorite Episode from each season

1. Like many on here, I pbly would go Tuttle for the comedic value... the story doesn't stand up to severe scrutiny but it's funny to watch the charade go on... also really like Chief Surgeon Who, Sometimes you hear the Bullet, Bananas Crackers Nuts, Sticky Wicket, and Requiem of a Light Weight too

2. Deal me Out is a clear favourite though though lots of love for Kim, 5 O'Clock Charlie, Hotlines Empty Arms, Incubator

3. Hard season to pick just one as it's a very well rounded season... Have to go with Mad Dogs and Servicemen though I love Rainbow Bridge, The General flipped at Dawn, Abyssinia Henry, Officer of the Day, Full Rich Day, it just goes on and on

4. Fun season where they changed up the format but with 2 clear stand outs... Frank really Shines in Der Tag and the darkness of The Late Captain Pierce are highpoint for me

5. One of the more forgettable seasons for me... Dear Sigmund I like a lot and Post Op is fun too. End run is quite deep

6. Don't care much for season 6 either... fewer really good episodes. Fallen Idol is really deep and Fade in and Fade out is top shelf too + there's your hit parade later in that is a classic

7. Turning point here as the show rebounds and IMO starts producing some really quality episodes again - Am a big fan of Preventative Medicine and a Night at Rosies, though the chocolates have to go to Dear Sis, the best Father Mulcahy episode by far

8. A favourite of mine with Morale Victory ply my favourite episode of all time closely followed by Yessir that's our baby and the tragedy of Heal Thyself

9. Very hit and miss season though Depressing News and a War for all seasons is are both rippers

10. Really good season for me despite having Picture this as a clear clear stand out as one of the series best episodes

11. Another really solid season... I like the Marilyn Monroe episode best here though the title escapes me... Bombshell I think? BJ having to cut the soldier loose is rough

Reading the thread as a whole in my humble opinion there are some real winning opinions and and a lot that really surprise me...

Good choices:
Tuttle is is great as are Deal Me Out , Bombed, and Dear Sigmund
It's great that Period of Adjustment got a mention... criminally underrated by most I feel
More I see you is quite fun too though very awkward... love the vulnerable Hawkeye
Very cool to see the Novocaine mutiny get a nod too

Bizarre to me
Have to say I really don't care for The Nurses or Bless you Hawkeye... both bottom tier for me
Cowboy... the attempted murder is off-putting
Showtime is a little pandering and lacks story for mine

The interview I understand why people love it but a rare unfunny despite trying performance by Hawkeye and a lacking depth Burns bring it down

Looking at BDOR list is endlessly fascinating to me... don't know where to start... very little love for the later seasons!!! Are you unfamiliar with them or is it more of an observational humour thing that you like?
I take it you don't care for BJ or Charles so much as they grab more and more focus...

Have to ask... Why do you dislike Goodbye Radar? To me that's top tier... especially part two.

Going through your list pre-season 9, I'm miffed at:
your indifference to Mad Dogs, Big Mac, Hot lips empty arms
Your like for Cowboy
You love "the gun" for some reason
Whilst Bug Out isn't top tier I'd give it more than 1 star
You really dislike Exorcism and Post Op which I like, yet u rate Movie tonight which I generally skip past
I do like Patent 4077 but generally don't rate that season though u seem to... Mash Olympics, Smell of music, Merchant!!! All below par for me

You seem to like the regressed behaviour aspect of Mash I think... is Mash escapism to you?

ANyways, that's all I have to say about that

Re: Favorite Episode(s)

Well, since you reached out to me, I'll try to respond to each of the points you brought up:
Moe_Hawk wrote: Looking at BDOR list is endlessly fascinating to me... don't know where to start... very little love for the later seasons!!! Are you unfamiliar with them or is it more of an observational humour thing that you like?
I take it you don't care for BJ or Charles so much as they grab more and more focus...
The later seasons are just almost unbearable to watch, IMHO: dark, preachy, sombre (in a bad way) - I just can't bring myself to watch them. I like B.J. and Charles both, so them being given more room to grow has nothing to do with it (though I must admit, "War Co-Respondant" was a very clumsy episode - as if Mike Farrell tried too hard to show Beej isn't perfect.
Moe_Hawk wrote:Have to ask... Why do you dislike Goodbye Radar? To me that's top tier... especially part two.
Well, given that Radar is my favorite character, I wasn't particularly happy to see him go . . . and you have to admit, it's clear that Gary Burghoff really didn't even want to come back to film that two-parter, Radar is incredibly bitter and out-of-character in those episodes - even episode writer Ken Levine said he was put off with how irritable he was filming that episode.

Was I harsh on "Big Mac"? I actually don't remember my own list it's been a while since I posted it, but I don't mind "Big Mac" really, it's an amusing episode, despite the Downer Ending. However, the other two you mentioned? They just don't do anything for me, I find them to be pretty forgettable, nothing stood out about them or left an impact on me (I will admit, Hot Lips's druken stupor and Hawkeye and Trapper's attempts to sober her up were pretty funny, but other than that. . . .)

Yeah, I know the rest of the M*A*S*H fandom hates it, but I find it pretty funny; my friend and I both find "Jeep. Tent. Boom. Kill. Jeep. Tent. Boom. Kill." to be pretty meme-worthy.
Moe_Hawk wrote:You love "the gun" for some reason
Yes, I don't know why, but I just do. I think it's something of a "comfort"/guilty pleasure episode for me. On a side note, gee, why is it always so much harder to explain why you like something and easier to explain why you dislike something? Lol.
Moe_Hawk wrote:Whilst Bug Out isn't top tier I'd give it more than 1 star
Okay, here's the problem: I'm very sensitive to moving. We moved a lot when I was growing up (upwards of 23 times), I hate seeing things packed in cardboard boxes, furnishings stripped for transporting, rooms being emptied out, it just gets to me, so to see the 4077th dismantled and everybody "move away" isn't easy for me to watch. Sorry.

"Exorcism" is . . . okay, maybe I'm being superstitious here, but I'm going to be honest: I don't know if you believe in spirits, or afterlife, or anything like that, but I actually have had encounters with spirits before in the past - it's a very eerie experience (they tend to feed off your energy, so it's difficult to even react to a spiritual encounter, because your muscles seize up and your body heat escapes you), and it seems like if I watch something pertaining to spirits like that (such as these ghost hunting programs), it almost feels like bad luck, so I try to avoid watching "Exorcism" for those reasons. "Post Op" is as dull as watching paint dry. But you don't like "Movie Tonight"? Wow, that's such a fun episode!
Moe_Hawk wrote:I do like Patent 4077 but generally don't rate that season though u seem to... Mash Olympics, Smell of music, Merchant!!! All below par for me
Aw, "The M*A*S*H Olympics" is hilarious! I love all those events they come up with, and the episodes full of so many "blink and you'll miss it," moments in the background it takes multiple viewings to absorb it all. "The Smell of Music" is also another fun episode, seeing how ridiculous Hawkeye and B.J.'s feud with Charles gets to the point the rest of the camp take matters into their own hands. "The Merchant of Korea"? Well, I live in the south eastern U.S., and it gets hotternell down here in the spring and summer, so with it being a heat wave episode, it's just very relatable.

As a matter of fact, it is, you put it very well, I've often found M*A*S*H to be televisual prozac.
