I think this is a good example of an episode's A and B stories working against each other, and kind of weakening the episode as a result (though that isn't to say I dislike the episode, because it's still one of the better ones IMO). For what it's worth, I did like the tray story for what it was. The scene where Hawkeye was telling the cook how to make French toast was especially enjoyable. But it all felt out of place when placed next to the much more serious Charles story, which was also far more interesting. I loved seeing Charles becoming obsessed with death after finding the bullet holes in his cap. And of course, David Ogden Stiers once again showed how wonderful his dramatic acting could be. I especially loved the ending, when he was asking the dying soldier what he was experiencing.
