Funky Background Music?

In some of the earlier episodes there would occasionally be some funky background music playing while some shenanigans or otherwise goofy stuff was going on. One instance I can recall is when Klinger took his hang glider flight. Any idea what music they used?

I don't know the answer off the top of my head but I'll try to take a look at the music cue sheet for "The Trial of Henry Blake" (the episode with Klinger hang gliding) this weekend and see what it says.

I checked the music cue sheet for "The Trial of Henry Blake." The piece of music you're asking about is called "Did You See That" and was written by regular M*A*S*H composer Benny Golson and published by Fox Fanfare Music, Inc.

I could be wrong but i think they stoped with that goofy music in season 4. The first 3 seasons had music as it went to commercial. Im really glad that came to end lol

I can't say I loved all of the "funky" music but I do appreciate how the earlier seasons use more incidental (or background) music.

One of my favorite episodes playing funky music is when Blakes desk is choppered away over everyone`s head! One of my favorite lines is when Henry is showing off his desk to Jack Soo and asks "Do you know what kind of wood this is made of"? Soo answers "oak", and Henry answers " nope, its oak". To this day, I still try to use this joke line as often as I can. RIP Jack Soo.

"To Market, To Market" perhaps made the most use of the funky and quirky music scoring, and yes, I too love the music that was used as we see Henry and Frank watching Henry's desk being whisked away by a chopper. I also loved the score that was used in "White Gold" while Flagg tears the tent apart to make it look like there was a major scuffle that went on between he and the prisoner they were keeping an eye on.

While yes, it did seem as though such use of music was mostly phased out by Season 4, it wasn't entirely gone: "An Eye for a Tooth" in Season 7 had a quirky rendition of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" as Charles tries to deny that he fell for Hawkeye, B.J., and Margaret's pay back for all of the pranks and practical jokes he instigated between them.

Unfortunately, it was Burt Metcalfe's idea to eventually phase out all music - underscoring, or incidental buttons - for the same reasoning as Larry Gelbart didn't want the laugh track: "just like the actual Korean War." The lack of any kind of music just kind of added a ghastly feel to the show that really didn't make it feel good.

I just happened to see the rerun where Flagg was trying to hurt himself last week! You`re right, the slow melodic music was perfect. Any scene with Flagg is a gem.
