Portrayal of Turkish Soldiers

Talk about all things M*A*S*H -- the novel, the film, the television series, even the play. Not to mention the spin-offs, merchandise, cast, crew and anything else you can think of to talk about.

Portrayal of Turkish Soldiers

Post by Moe_Hawk »

One thing I always found fascinating was the references they made/about the Turks in MASH and given the amount of thought that generally went into the show, I often wonder about what/whether there was a message or theme there.

The examples that come to mind...
- The crazy Turk in 'Full Rich Day'... is very tough, wants to return to his buddies and kill the Chinese... seems good natured enough though returning Radar after he passes out
- The unconscious Turk that needs heaps of blood during the shortage, and at the end of episode the Turkish soldiers attend the MASH to donate out of gratitude (on a side note, always thought it was a bit weird that BJ and Hawkeye mock his accent at the end)
- A wounded Turkish soldier enquiring about getting back to duty as 'a Turk must kill many men', and then his CO accusing him of self-inflicting injuries
- The Turk and the Greek fighting in post op
- The Turks and the Greeks fighting at Rosie's

There definitely seems to be a theme of toughness at the very least'

Anyone have thoughts?
