Colonel calls most by proper names but one?

Hi, why does Colonel Potter call most by their proper surname but calls his assistant by the name, 'Radar'?
Radar showed early on that he earned his nickname, by knowing when Potter wanted to know where the latrine was before he asked.
Everyone in camp calls Radar by his nickname, high and low.
Potter called Pierce "Hawkeye" quite a few times too.
