Moonlight Serenade Heard in an Episode of M*A*S*H?

Dea is trying to identify an episode of M*A*S*H that features the Glenn Miller song “Moonlight Serenade”? I’m stumped but rather than flip through hundreds of pages of music cue sheets, I thought I’d bring the question to the masses. It may have been an episode focusing on the relationship between Hawkeye and Margaret, heard while the camera lingered over an empty O.R. at night.

If you’re not familiar with the song “Moonlight Serenade,” here’s a YouTube video you can listen to:

Does it sound familiar to anyone? Does hearing it evoke vivid memories of an episode of M*A*S*H?

  1. As far as I can remember, this is from the beginning of the episode which starts in Margaret’s tent. The music is playing on the Victrola when Radar walks in to wake her. He straightens her tent a little bit, freaks her out when he wakes her, and she orders him out. On his way out, he reverses everything he did and backs out of her tent.

Cannot remember the episode or the season (although it features Margaret wearing her negligee, so it’s definitely an early season).

  2. Found it! It is in Deluge (4×23). It is played during one of the news clips that is cut in throughout the episode.

    1. I’ll have to check this out! Thanks for the reply. My dvds are in storage but next time I get them out I will watch Deluge to verify that that’s the episode I’m thinking of.

      1. Just had a chance to watch the clips you refer to from Deluge. Unfortunately, the song that is playing is *not* Moonlight Serenade, although it is heavy on the clarinet. Thanks though.

So the hunt is still on to find the episode!

  3. Speaking of music, it’s driving me insane that I can’t put a name on a classical piece that is heard in ‘Picture This’. The music is played at the very end, just before the credits. Hawkeye walks over to the phonograph and turns the volume up. The picture freezes and the piece is played a bit into the credits. Anyone who knows?

    1. The piece you are referring to is the Overture of Pique Dame by Tchaikovsky…….but I always say ‘Ahhhhhh…..Bach’.

      1. It’s not Tchaikovsky, I’ve listened to several of these overtures on Youtube, there is a part of vivid music in the middle of it, but it’s not that Hawkeye turns up at the end of “Pictre this”. It must be Wagner, (the german…) I’ll be back on this.

      2. It is called Pique Dame – Overture, but it’s not Tchaikovsky who wrote it, but Franz von Suppé 🙂
