5 O’Clock Charlie Voted Favorite Episode from Season 2

Last month, as part of the Great 2015 M*A*S*H Episode Poll, visitors to MASH4077TV.com voted “5 O’Clock Charlie” their favorite episode from Season 2 of M*A*S*H. In second place was “Deal Me Out,” with “Carry On, Hawkeye” rounding out the Top 3.

I had considered extending the Season 2 poll an extra day or two to make up for starting it a few days later and for February being a short month. I changed my mind after seeing that a total of 211 votes were cast, way up from the 141 total voters for the Season 1 poll (and actually the best for any poll here at MASH4077TV.com since 2013).

Only one episode from Season 2 failed to receive a single vote: “George.” Here are the full results:

  1. 5 O’Clock Charlie (29%, 62 Votes)
  2. Deal Me Out (9%, 18 Votes)
  3. Carry On, Hawkeye (7%, 14 Votes)
  4. The Trial of Henry Blake (6%, 13 Votes)
  5. For Want of a Boot (6%, 13 Votes)
  6. Crisis (6%, 13 Votes)
  7. The Sniper (5%, 10 Votes)
  8. A Smattering of Intelligence (4%, 9 Votes)
  9. The Incubator (3%, 7 Votes)
  10. Kim (3%, 6 Votes)
  11. Divided We Stand (3%, 6 Votes)
  12. Dear Dad… Three (2%, 5 Votes)
  13. Radar’s Report (2%, 5 Votes)
  14. L.I.P. (Local Indigenous Personnel) (2%, 5 Votes)
  15. Hot Lips and Empty Arms (2%, 4 Votes)
  16. Operation Noselift (2%, 4 Votes)
  17. Henry In Love (1%, 3 Votes)
  18. As You Were (1%, 3 Votes)
  19. Officers Only (1%, 3 Votes)
  20. Mail Call (1%, 3 Votes)
  21. Dr. Pierce and Mr. Hyde (1%, 3 Votes)
  22. The Chosen People (0%, 1 Votes)
  23. For the Good of the Outfit (0%, 1 Votes)
  24. George (4%, 0 Votes)

I’m not sure why the poll software gives “George” 4% of the vote despite nobody actually voting for it. That’s got to be some sort of bug. I voted with the majority this time and picked “5 O’Clock Charlie.” It’s a hilarious episode.

  1. Season 2 is a tough one to vote for. The majority of the episodes are great and picking one out was difficult. I voted for ‘Crisis’ only because the tag scene just makes me cry with laughter. Henry on the phone to I-Corps saying he was talking from deep inside a great big empty and the camera panning out to show his empty office with just him sitting on his chair and the skeleton by his side.

    1. I agree 100%. I voted for Crisis also, that episode never fails to crack me up, repeatedly. Still, Season 2 has so many good episodes and I have nothing against 5 O’Clock Charlie — a classic for sure.

    2. I’m the same way. Chrisis is one that always cracks me up, especially when Henry mentioned something about “what kind of person steals a man’s drawers and cuts off his legs”. 🙂 Classic Henry! But, 5 o’clock Charlie is definitely one of the best of the season. It’s one that my kids always wanted to watch.

  2. I had voted for “Kim”, because I thought that episode really brought out the best of all the characters when the camp essentially adopted Kim, believing his parents are dead; even Margaret and Frank found themselves in a genuine state of horror when they say Kim had crawled into the middle of the mine field – that was probably one of Frank’s most human moments from the entire show. This was also one of the very few times Trapper actually shined, because of all the main characters, he really got shafted in terms of character development, so this was a really good episode for him.

As far as “5 O’Clock Charlie” goes, that tends to be considered one of the best episodes of the series – it’s not exactly one of my favorites, I’ll admit, but it is perhaps one of the funniest.

    1. Kim is another great episode and for the reasons you cite. Trapper is one of my favorite characters so I enjoy the few episodes that have a bit more spotlight on him.
