    Tristar Collectibles Article Updated

    Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 at 9:41 pm

Peter Kurch, who volunteered back in 2008 to write about the 1982 line of action figures, vehicles and a playset from Tristar International, has finally been able to get his hands on the 4077th Medical Unit Helicopter, the one vehicle he needed to complete his collection. He has rewritten his article, adding new details about the articulation of the figures, and has also taken brand new photographs of his incredible collection. You can find the article here; a gallery of his photographs can be found here. A huge thank you to Peter for taking the time to put this all together.

(For the record, this was originally a feature but I decided it fit better as an article.)

    M*A*S*H at the Smithsonian Article

    Friday, August 7th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Following the filming of the final episode of M*A*S*H, 20th Century-Fox donated two of the sets used in the production of the series to the Smithsonian Institution. The O.R. and the Swamp were taken down and packed up at the studio’s Stage 9 sound stage in Hollywood, California and moved to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. where they were incorporated into a new exhibition called “M*A*S*H — Binding Up the Wounds” at the National Museum of American History. The exhibition opened to the public on July 30th, 1983 and was originally scheduled to close on September 30th, 1984 but due to overwhelming public interest was extended until January 2nd, 1985.

I’ve written a fairly comprehensive article about the exhibition: M*A*S*H at the Smithsonian. Take a moment to read it and let me know what you think. If you were able to visit the Museum of Natural History when “M*A*S*H — Binding Up the Wounds” was on display please leave your thoughts.

    New Article: M*A*S*H in Syndication

    Sunday, February 22nd, 2009 at 1:54 pm

I’ve just put the finishing touches on a new article called M*A*S*H in Syndication. Here’s the introduction:

Syndication refers to a method of distribution in which individual outlets are supplied with content by a central provider. Comic strips, for example, are syndicated to newspapers. In the television industry, shows can be placed in “first-run syndication” (where individual television stations are the first to air new programs) or “off-network syndication” (when a program originally broadcast on a network is later sold to individual stations). In the past, networks would also syndicate repeats of their own programming in daytime and late-night time slots.

M*A*S*H, of course, was broadcast by CBS from 1972 to 1983. While it was on the air, however, CBS aired repeats of the series during the afternoon and late at night. The series was also sold into off-network syndication in the late 1970s. Off-network syndication continued long after M*A*S*H went off the air in 1983. In 1998, the series went into cable syndication.

As of February 2009, M*A*S*H is being syndicated on two cable channels, one broadcast network and on local stations.

Did you know that M*A*S*H may be the only network television series ever to be broadcast in three time slots by the same network? After reading this article you will. You can also watch four promotional spots for M*A*S*H in syndication, including one for newly remastered episodes and another for a marathon on FX.

I hope to eventually write another article about M*A*S*H in international syndication but at the moment I have very little information about the show airing in other countries.

Thanks to Tom and the fine folks at The Bulletin Board for confirming that M*A*S*H is still broadcast in local syndication in some areas of the country.

I’ve enabled comments on all of my articles (AfterMASH, Making M*A*S*H, M-U-S-H, etc.) and we’ll see if doing this leads to interesting discussions or a lot more spam. So check out the articles and if you have anything to say, now you can.

All of the Flash video files on the site can now be seen in full screen, although the quality suffers somewhat. Just click on the little icon in the bottom right next to the volume control. Also, I have updated the article on M-U-S-H with some information from a fan.
