I had trouble again this month figuring out which episode to vote for. I probably could have voted for “The Smell of Music” because it is indeed a great episode. My March 2015 review of “The Smell of Music” can be found here. Ultimately, however, I decided to cast my vote for the season premiere: “Fade Out, Fade In.” I’ve become such a fan of Charles over the past few years that I felt I had to vote for his debut episode.

  1. I voted for ‘Fade Out, Fade In’ as well. It was heart breaking to lose Frank but on repeated viewings, it’s very clear to see that he was becoming one note. The entry of Charles brought a new perspective to the show and Season Six is all the better for it. IMO, it is the best season of the entire show barring one stray lone bad episode ‘In Love and War.’ I had a difficult time voting in this poll because all the episodes are so fantastic.

    1. Though the location scenery for “The Mash Olympics” is beautiful, I find the episode silly beyond comment. To me, the Donald Penobscot period, when it involves entire episodes, is silly and subpar, though I realize it was an important transition in the development of Margaret’s character.

  2. I agree – season six was a very strong season, with the exception of a few. I never liked “Fallen Idol” since that is simply just too painful to watch – Hawkeye and Radar seemed so out of character, so unlike them, IMHO when they were yelling at each other. “In Love and War” was simply a blah episode for me, one I don’t mind skipping. The “Comrade in Arms” episodes are also ones I don’t mind skipping. The thing Hawkeye and Margaret had throughout the series was fine. But, these episodes were a little too over the top. I was going to vote for “War of Nerves” since I enjoyed the bonfire scene and especially since Sidney is my favorite non-regular character….but, because he is my favorite non-reg character, I didn’t vote for it due to the scene where he was verbally blasted by that soldier – again another painful scene to watch.

So, if I thought about it before voting, I probably would’ve voted for “Fade Out, Fade In” since I really enjoy Winchester’s character (same reasoning as RJ’s). But, I voted for “Your Hit Parade” – this was one episode that always stuck out for me as being enjoyable to watch….no particular reason, I just liked it a lot.

Tough season to vote for…..and I think season seven may be tough as well. I know there’ll be several ones I certainly will not vote for, “Inga” being one of ’em.

  3. Considering that this is my favorite season, I think I can really discuss this poll on a grander scale. I do really like “The Smell of Music”, though I’m not sure I agree that it’s the best of the season. “The M*A*S*H Olympics” certainly deserves its number two spot, though, that episode was hilarious on ten different levels!

I really don’t agree with how lopsided the results are for this poll, though. Weak episodes like “Patent 4077” and “In Love and War” (I agree with Sue, one of the worst of this season) are among the top ten, while good episodes like “Mail Call Three” and “What’s Up Doc?” are at the bottom?

I also don’t quite agree that “The Light That Failed” and “The Grim Reaper” are also much higher in the results than, say, “The Merchant of Korea” or “Last Laugh” (seriously, how did either of those get so low?).

Those are just my thoughts anyway.

  4. I voted for “Temporary Duty” because Charles is my favorite character and he was on the same side with BJ for most of this episode. I also loved his uncharacteristic hug of Hawkeye at the end. This has to be the MASH episode where Alan Alda appeared the least, as George Lindsey in his own bio stated that Alda didn’t appear in it. Obviously Alda filmed his scenes some other week and was out when most of the scenes, including all of Lindsey’s, were filmed. I think this was the last episode filmed in Season 6, so maybe he left early to film a movie during the hiatus.

  5. the smell of music was a funny episode but i saw a mistake in it they were drumming and playing the kazoo to the tune of bridge on the river kwai problem was that movie didn’t come out till 1957 and the Armistice ended the Korean War – Jul 27, 1953

    1. Actually, the music (Colonel Bogey’s March) was composed during WWI (1914 to be specific) so it might have been known to military personnel. David Lean just made it world-famous with The Bridge on The River Kwai.
