Deadline.com reports that Alan Alda and Norman Lear will both receive special Founder Awards at the 40th International Emmy Awards ceremony to be held November 19th in New York City. From the official press release announcing the awards:
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the International Emmy Awards Gala, the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will present special Founders Awards to two global television legends, actor/director Alan Alda and writer/producer Norman Lear, it was announced today by Bruce L. Paisner, President & CEO of the International Academy. Both Mr. Alda (M*A*S*H) and Mr. Lear (All in The Family) had programs in distribution in 1972, the year of the first International Emmy Awards Gala. They will accept the awards at the 2012 Gala, on Monday, November 19, in New York City.
“In television, as in other human endeavors, we are the sum of what has come before us,” said Paisner. “It is with great pride, on the 40th anniversary of the first Gala, that the International Academy salutes these two industry legends, whose work has helped make us and television all that we are today.”

The International Emmy Awards are presented by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which is not related to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (which presents the U.S. Primetime Emmy Awards) and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (which presents the U.S. Daytime, News & Documentary Emmy Awards).

This has to be different, as the Emmys started in 1949, and this event started in 1972 – From Wikipedia – The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presents the International Emmy Award to the best television programs produced, and initially aired, outside the U.S. There are fourteen program categories for the International Emmy Awards: Arts Programming; Best Performance by an Actor; Best Performance by an Actress; Children & Young People; Comedy; Current Affairs; Documentary; Drama Series; Interactive Channel; Interactive Program; Interactive TV Service; News; Non-Scripted Entertainment; Telenovela; and TV Movie/Mini-Series.
The awards are presented at the International Emmy Awards Gala. Held each year in November at the Hilton Hotel, New York City,[21] the Gala attracts over 1,200 television professionals, who gather to celebrate excellence in television and network with their peers. The three Interactive categories are awarded in a separate ceremony held during MIPTV in Cannes.
The International Emmy award categories have three voting rounds. Judges must have at least five years of experience in the television industry. They are not required to be existing members of the International Academy, but are encouraged to join.[22]
