Tony Packo’s Restaurant in Trouble

Tony Packo’s, the famous Toledo, Ohio restaurant beloved by Corporal Klinger and and in real life by actor Jamie Farr, is in severe financial trouble stemming from a long-standing feud between family members. According to the Associated Press, the son and grandson of Tony Packo are battling in court for ownership of the restaurant, a bank has foreclosed on millions of dollars worth of loans, and a court-appointed third party is currently in charge.

The menu for the restaurant claims it was mentioned in seven episodes (the AP article says six). How many can we come up with if we put our head together? I’ll get the ball rolling with “The Interview” and “Dreams.” Also, has anyone reading this ever been to Tony Packo’s? I’ve read that there are pictures and signed hot dog buns from the M*A*S*H cast on display, and perhaps even a few props.

(Thanks to Dan for passing along this news.)

  1. Tony Packo’s is also mentioned on ‘The Grim Reaper’ – the guys are having an impromptu barbeque in The Swamp towards the end and Klinger mentions the restaurant while cooking the hot dogs.

  2. Its mentioned in “A war for all seasons” when hawk and BJ order the sausage casings for the kidney machine they built. Also, RJ….can I get credit for the last Name the Episode…T Woods never responded….thanks…

    1. Sorry about that, chuckles. I wish I could say it was a copy/paste error but I honestly have no idea what happened.

      1. Uh, oh – did I miss something? Please let me know what response was needed – thanks!! 🙂

  3. I’m pretty sure Klinger mentioned Packo’s in GFA to Soon-Lee:

“Boy, I’d give ANYTHING to be back home… hanging out at Packo’s with the guys, drinkin’ beer, and havin’ a dog while the chili sauce drips down your arm…”

  4. Also Klinger mentioned Packo’s to Father Mulcahy in “Dear Sis” –

Father Mulcahy is tending bar in the officers club and Klinger is confiding to the Father how he’s longing for Toledo, and his ex-wife and “dreaming of a Christmas tree ten feet high, strung with an endless chain of Packo’s Hungarian hot dogs.” 🙂

Hopefully things will work themselves out money wise for Packo’s, and it will remain in business. It’s a shame that quarrelling over dollar signs between family members and who wants the bigger piece of the pie comes in the way of a good thing…

  5. My family and I moved to Columbus OH from PA and I’ve been wanting to get up to Toledo to visit Tony Packo’s ever since our move…..And I agree TrapperJoe – I sure hope they can work things out.

    1. I’ve been to packo’s a few times on my way to Michigan. The one on front street the day before a truck wrecked in the front of the building.

  6. Ok, so I’ve watched all six episodes the last couple weeks, and in the episode “grim reaper” Packo’s is mentioned twice. The first time while he is reminicing with a casualty from Toledo, saying he can smell the hot peppers and packos on his breath and then at the end of the same episode when they are actually eating packos and decide to share some with Winchester. So technically it was mentioned seven times. I’m new to toledo but love packo hot dogs!

  7. Great News:
Tony Packo’s survives. I pass through Toledo twice a week to Detroit and always stop on at Tony’s Thursdays on my way home. Thursday’s Special is 2 Tony Dogs, a cup of soup, and Packo’s famous pickles. Be sure to ask for your dogs loaded,(mustard, chopped onion, and cony sauce.)
Also: The Chicken Chili is the best. Blindfold a Texan and he’d never know it’s not beef.
Not near Toledo…Not a problem, go to their website and order by the can or case. Want an (Almost Packo Dog) Order their canned cony sauce, heat it in a sauce pan, grill some local Hunky sausage, split it down the middle, put each half in a wiener bun, mustard, onion, and the sauce. Holy-Toledo, it’s almost Packo’s.

  8. Was there LAST night!!! Still going strong!! Love MASH, and I live 20 min from Tony Packo’s…Still awesome dogs!!
